Types of Female Models

When most people think of female models they automatically think of legendary supermodels Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen,Tyra Banks or Heidi Klum. However, there are many other types of models whose names you wouldn't know but who are making a terrific income. They're working behind the scenes as fit or showroom models and as commercial models working with manufacturers, suppliers, pharmaceutical companies, airlines, automobile manufacturers, fitness companies, and much more. Even if you can't be the next supermodel you'll probably still fit into one of these categories of female models.


Fashion or Editorial Model 

                    • Age - 16-21
                    • Height - 5'9''to 6' 
                    • Measurements - 32''22''33''
                    • Mostly seen on magazines such as Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle.






Runway or Catwalk Model

  • Height - 5'8''(173 cm) and 6' tall
  • Measurements - 34''-23''-34''
  • Designers hire models to fit the clothes they've made for their collections.

Commercial Model

                  • Can be any age, shape, size, and height.
                  • Commercial models are essentially models who look like everyday people and are employed to advertise products.






Plus-Sized Model

  • Height requirements vary depending on the type of plus size modeling.
  • Models are generally size 12 and up with good body proportions.

Petite Model

                • Height - 5'11'' to 5'7''
                • Petite models don't generally do runway work
                • They're often booked for swimsuit, lingerie, and parts modeling.







Child Model 

  • Age - under 12 years
  • They can be any size and height.

Swimsuit or Lingerie Model

                  • Height - 5'7''-6'
                  • Measurements - 32''-22''-33'' 
                  • Models are often curvier and more voluptuous than editorial models.













Glamour Model

  • Requirements are not as strict in glamour as they are in runway or fashion model.
  • Glamour modeling is geared toward sexier, more appealing photographs.

Fitness Model

                    • Height - 5'4" to 6'.
                    • Models who are very athletic, fit, and toned. 
                    • Work for supplement manufacturers, athletic wear companies, fitness companies, and fitness magazines.






Fit Model

  • Height - 5'5'' to 5'9''
  • Models must have balanced, well-proportioned and symmetrical bodies with standard size measurements
  • Fit models are models who work behind the scenes in fashion houses

Parts Model

                  • Parts models specialize in modeling body parts such as hands, feet and legs.
                  • Models should have long slender hands, straight fingers, uniform nail beds, and a nice even skin tone.
                  • Same goes with Feet and Legs.



Promotional Model


  • Models is someone that is hired to promote products or services at trade shows, conventions, and live events.
  • These models teach the consumer about their products or brand.


Mature Model


                  • Age - Above 30 years
                  • These models have high demand for all kinds of modeling work.
